Using the highly effective Policy Governance® model, it’s Board Transformation and Coaching Packages prepares the entire board with the skills and knowledge required of directors, which in turn provides the organisation with strong and effective governance and direction.

Policy Governance® is an integrated set of concepts and principles that describes the job of any governing board. Talent Finders base their work on the Policy Governance® model developed by American Dr John Carver, the most published thinker on governance worldwide. It is already in use in New Zealand.

The clarity of roles from adopting this approach assists with long-term vision as board members focus on strategic leadership rather than administrative detail. It helps communication between board and management, and it empowers the jobs of individual executive, while also providing leadership and reducing non-board related activities. Individuals are equipped with insight and with practical information into the direction and roles, with a proven model to guide decision-making. The board works strategically, with the ability to work proactively by setting agendas in advance, while having monitoring in place for the GM/CEO to get on and do their job.

All board members attend a Policy Governance® workshop and have follow-up coaching to ensure smooth implementation. Board Members leave the workshop with a set of working policies. This is one of the key benefits for participants; as a team producing their own board manual.

Talent Finders introduces Policy Governance® to New Zealand businesses and organisations through workshop packages, specifically designed to suit your organisation, as follows:

Policy Governance Workshop

Policy Governance Workshops are aimed at established boards that need to move to greater effectiveness in governance. The workshop can also be done with developing boards, and usually follows on from the Introduction to Policy Governance workshop.

Content: Typically this is a two day workshop that requires the commitment of the full board. Talent Finders, however is happy to look at other delivery timeframes. Talent Finders provides all background preparation materials, facilitation and administration support to undertake this workshop. The four policy areas to be developed are:

  • Governance (how the board manages itself)
  • Board-GM linkage
  • Executive limitations (the GM’s operating boundaries)
  • Ends (organisational results).

Outcome: The board will leave the workshops with a full set of board policies that provides a complete framework for board decision making. Talent Finders provides coaching and tools to ensure implementation of this new learning during the boards regular schedule of meetings.

Introduction to Policy Governance®

This workshop is aimed at boards seeking greater clarity around roles, who want to ensure they are working at a strategic level while letting the GM manage.

Content: This is a six-hour workshop. Members will be provided with information around policy governance and how it works, the benefits and the processes to implement. Talent Finders provides all background material, facilitation and administration support, covering:

  • What Policy Governance® can add to your board
  • Principles of Policy Governance®
  • The four areas of policy development
  • Steps to take in adopting this model

Outcome: This course will provide a clear understanding of what Policy Governance® can add to your board. You will have sufficient information to work as a board to develop this model in-house, or you can utilise further opportunities for policy development provided by Talent Finders’ two-day Policy Governance® Workshop. Post-workshop comments such as “For the first time I understand my proper role as a board member” are not uncommon!
